   지난 달 3D 시스템즈의 제록스 Solid Ink Engineering and Development 팀 인수 소식이 있었군요. 이번 인수로 3D 시스템즈는 제록스의 100여명의 연구원과 디자인 기술, 그리고 잉크와 프린트 헤드 기술을 확보했습니다. 

   “The stronger our marketplace leadership, the more powerful our economic model becomes,” continued Reichental. “Simply put, a solidified position translates directly to higher revenue, higher profitability and greater earnings power over time and we are willing to sacrifice short term earnings to get there faster."

   CES 2014에서 삼성전자와 3D 시스템즈가 함께 특별한 이벤트 선보였습니다. 갤럭시노트를 이용해 자신만의 특별한 코인(coin)을 만들어보는 이벤트입니다. 이 이벤트를 위해 3D 시스템즈는 새로운 앱을 만들었는데 이 앱을 통해 사용자는 자신만의 코인을 디자인하고 3D 시스템즈의 3D 프린터로 전송하면 이 코인이 출력되고 특별 제작된 케이스에 코인을 결합하여 사용자에게 제공해 줍니다. 단, 모든 사용자에게 제공되는 건 아니고 일단 코인 디자인을 접수한 다음 인기가 높은 디자인에 한해 출력해 준다고 합니다.

   3D 프린팅 마켓플레이스이자 모델 공유사이트인 Shapeways에서 2013년 자신의 사이트를 분석한 3D 프린팅 트렌드 자료를 내놨습니다. 전체 시장이 아니라 Shapeways의 거래만을 분석한 자료이기 때문에 전체 시장 상황과 맞지 않는 부분이 있을 수도 있지만 참고할 만한 자료입니다.

   주요 트렌드를 보면 아래와 같습니다. 한 줄로 요약하자면 이렇게 되겠군요.

1. Rise of the Garage Entrepreneur - 3D printing democratized production, opening up access for more people than ever to be creative and turn their designs into businesses

• As of 2013, over 50% of Shapeways Shop Owners taught themselves how to 3D model
• Product uploads increased from 40k/month in 2012 to nearly 100k/month in 2013
• There was a 240% increase in uploads via Shapeways API in 2013, meaning more businesses were built for Shapeways this year than in years past
• Shop Owners range from teenage hobbyists who design ornaments and rings to artists who learned to model 3D jewelry to professional engineers with 25+ years modeling experience who design chess sets

• Shapeways saw some of the highest (triple digit) growth of orders from places as far away as China, Taiwan, Luxemburg, and Tunisia

   일본의 사가 대학과 Cyfuse Biomedical이 공동으로 환자의 피부세포를 이용해 혈관을 출력하는 기술을 개발했습니다. 임상실험이 끝난 뒤 2018년에는 인체실험이 가능할 것으로 예상하고 있습니다. 

   이들은 자신들이 개발한 특수 시스템을 이용해 2-3mm 직경의 혈관을 10일 정도에 출력할 수 있다고 합니다. 현재 일본, 중국, 미국, 싱가폴에 특허 등록되어 있으며 다른 나라에도 특허 진행 중입니다.

   Freedonia Group의 3D 프린팅 시장 전망 보고서에 따르면 매년 3D 프린팅 시장이 20% 이상씩 커져 2017년에는 50억 달러에 이를 것으로 전망했습니다. 몇가지 주요 내용을 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다.

1. 여전히 ABS, PLA 등 플라스틱 원료가 가장 많이 사용되겠지만 메탈 원료의 사용이 급속히 증가할 것이며 3D 스캐너 등 주변 시장도 높은 성장율을 기록할 것

2. 특별히 의료/치과 분야에서 빠른 성장과 기회가 있을 것으로 보여지며 개인화 시장과 자동차, 항공 등의 분야에서도 평균 이상의 성장을 기록할 것

3. 여전히 미국 시장이 가장 큰 비중을 차지하며 서유럽과 아태 지역이 큰 폭으로 성장할 것(특히 중국 시장)

   CG Trader가 크리스마트와 연말을 맞아 'Christmas 3D Printing Challenge' 대회를 개최합니다. 일반인들이 크리스마스와 어울리는 제품을 만드는 대회로 'Best Christmas 3D Printable Portfolio'와 'Best Christmas 3D Printable Model' 두개 부분으로 나뉘어 열리며 각 1, 2 등에겐 상금과 상품을 수여합니다. 기간은 12월 31일까지.

시상 내역

   Shamees Aden이라는 사람이 발명한 자가 복구 능력을 가진 러닝 슈즈. 이 신발은 protocell을 3D 프린터로 출력한 제품으로 생명공학과 3D 프린팅을 결합해 만든 제품입니다. protocell은 무생물 분자로 압력이나 움직임, 빛, 열 등에 반응하는 물질인데 이 물질을 이용하여 3D 프린터로 출력한 제품은 마치 제2의 피부처럼 사용할 수 있다고 합니다.

   육상 선수가 운동을 마치고 신발을 protocell 용액이 담긴 용기에 넣어 두면 스스로 손상된 부위가 복구되며 다른 색깔로 변형도 가능하다고 하는군요.

   2050년 쯤에 현실화될 수 있을 거라고 하는데 살아 생전에 볼 수 있을지는 모르겠군요.. 원리가 무척 궁금합니다.

   포르쉐가 자사의 자동차 'Cayman S'를 3D 프린터로 출력할 수 있도록 디자인 파일을 공개했습니다. 자신만의 자동차를 디자인하고 색깔을 입혀 출력해보라는 의미입니다. (파일 다운로드) 이렇게 제작한 자동차의 사진을 촬영하여 포르쉐 웹페이지에 업로드하거나 해쉬태그 #3DCayman을 붙여 트위터에 보낼 수도 있습니다.

   Markets and Markets에서 3D 프린팅 원료에 대한 시장 보고서를 내놨습니다.(유료보고서입니다.) 이 보고서는 2018년에 3D 프린팅 원료 시장이 4억 달러를 넘어설 것으로 전망하고 있습니다.

   우선 ABS, PLA 등 플라스틱 원료 시장은 2012년 7천만 달러에서 2018년 2억 9백만 달러에 이를 것이며 이 기간 중 연평균 성장률은 19.9%에 달할 것으로 전망하고 있습니다. 지역적으로는 미국, 일본, 중국, 독일, 영국 등이 주 소비국이 될 것이며 2012년 기준으로 북미와 아태 지역이 68%를 점하고 있습니다. 아태지역은 2013년부터 2018년까지 연평균 성장률도 27.6%에 달하며 원료시장의 성장을 주도할 것으로 예측됩니다.

   3D 프린팅 원료 시장은 3D Systems(미국), Stratasys(미국), Arcam AB(스웨덴), ExOne Gmbh(독일)가 생산과 공급의 75%를 점하고 있습니다.

    Swiss Federal Institute of Technology의 연구원들이 스마트폰으로 3D 모델을 만들 수 있는 앱을 개발했습니다. 정교한 모델이 만들어지려면 좀 더 다듬어져야 할 것 같긴 하지만 제법 쓸만한 모델이 만들어지는군요. 금주에 시드니에서 있을 한 컨퍼런스에서 발표한다는데 앱이 언제 배포될지 궁금하군요.
